Earth Science Projects - Five Down-to-Earth Ideas [sciencetechnology-center.blogspot.com]

"Taanya is a beautiful, intelligent and multi-faceted computer science student in Mumbai. As she is about to pass out of college, her parents begin to talk about her marriage. That's when she tells them that she likes a boy called Tej and wants to marry him. Tej also loves her but is reluctant to accept the proposal because of a problem in his family. While he does not want to cheat her by keeping the truth from her, he is scared of losing her if he tells her about his family's problem. His friends try to convince him that every family has some problem so he need not even mention it to Taanya. Finally, when Tej and Taanya's families meet, there seems to be no problem and the proposal is mutually agreed upon. A grand wedding takes place and Taanya arrives in her sasuraal. The moment of shock come when all the rituals and ceremonies are over and the guests are all gone. Taanya realizes that Tej's household is full of men, just men. All the chachis, mamis, buas etc who attended the wedding had all gone and she was the only woman in the house. Taanya does not know how to handle this. Though in college days she was never uncomfortable among boys and she grew up with a brother, this was another feeling altogether. A life always surrounded by only men -- all strangers to begin with -- looks unimaginable. She stays put anyways but within twenty four hours she realizes that these men are like pebbles on a beach -- all different from each other and rubbing each other sour. She ...

Earth science projects are an amazing way for kids to become interested in science as well as the earth around them. There are a lot of "earth sciences", giving kids lots of cool possibilities for experiments and demonstrations. Here are five down to earth ideas for your project:

1. Find out if salt affects the boiling point of water. Using distilled water, measure the temperature at which water boils with different amounts of salt added. This easy experiment can be done fast - in under an hour!

2. Test types of insulation to see which works best. Freeze bottles of water, insulate them with various building materials, and see which one stays frozen the longest. This is science project is great for students concerned about our environment.

3. Make a tornado. Simply half fill a clear 2 liter soda bottle with water, and swirl it until it makes a tornado. This is an easy elementary demonstration, that pro bably won't win the science fair, but will fascinate younger students while allowing them to observe swirling currents. (We bet you'll get a kick out of it, too!)

4. Measure the amount of oxygen that is in air. Put duct tape on a hand warmer, activate it, and quickly tape it to the bottom of a tall jar. Invert the jar and put the mouth into a pan of water. As the hand warmer heats up, it will use up the oxygen in the glass, causing the water level to rise. If you're traveling to and from the mountains and compare the amounts of oxygen, this is a great experiment. Otherwise, it's a cool demonstration.

5. Compare brands of toilet tissue to see which is most biodegradable. Weigh samples of different brands of tissue, place them in water and allow them to break down. After a day, 'flush' the samples through a funnel, then weigh what is left. Your results may change your shopping habits!

Question by wodasha: What do you have to take before going to a computer science class ? I know a little bit of Algebra and I'm about to go to community college. I'm asking this because I just watched a computer science course video from Harvard and I had to quit watching it because they had confusing stuff like binary numbers etc... I'm already watching the math tutor dvds and their good. But what are some college courses I can watch online to get ready for computer science ? Best answer for What do you have to take before going to a computer science class ?:

Answer by gjmb1960
I can advise you Startrek or other science fiction movies. Most computer scientists love this kind of science fiction. For math you need discrete math , but it is sparely used. You have to know how to calculate, and be able to create formulas that express the complexity of an algorithm. Some boolean algebra is helpfull as well. And binary numbers although you would rarely use it.

I'm sure they're explain everything. And trust me, as long as your interested, you'll learn :)

Honestly, it really depends on where you go to school and classes you take. For instance, if you are going to a community college, you probably are not going to understand an advanced Harvard video. Not saying your dumb, but mainly if your going to Harvard you already have a strong background. I go to a local community college for software development. You will meet with an adviser, talk about what you want to do, select a degree path, and start. Your first classes will be some general math and english, and you will also have like an intro to computers hardware/software. They are going to start as if you have no idea what a computer is. As you progress, classes will progress. Next semester you'll probably start an intro to java, or visual basic as they are easy languages. The instructors will show you step by step how to code, and so will the book you buy. Don't worry it's rather simple to program, all languages have similar code just different syntax.

I used to take a few Tums. ~ If you have had some math and have a good general knowledge of computers and have had decent grades and study well you will do OK. Base numbers other than 10 is easy once you get the idea. Learn Base 2 here: http://www.memorymentor.com/learn_binary_number_system.htm
