OK, let's say that there are n students, and in the first instance, each of them pays an amount a to cover the fee f. We have n a = f, Now, the second sentence gives the condition (n + 10) (a - 2) = f, ...and the other condition is that (n - 5) (a + 2) = f. Since f is on the right-hand side of all three equations, we can equate them. Let's equate the first two: n a = (n + 10) (a - 2) n a = n a - 2n + 10a - 20 2n = 10a - 20 n = 5a - 10. Now, let's equate the first and the third of our original equations: n a = (n - 5) (a + 2) n a = n a + 2n - 5a - 10 2n = 5a + 10 n = (5/2)a + 5. So, we have two new results for n. Let's equate these: 5a - 10 = (5/2)a + 5 a = 15 / (5 - (5/2)) a = 6. So, we have the base amount, a = $ 6. Now let's use an earlier result to get the number of students: n = 5a - 10 n = 5(6) - 10 n = 20. So, there are 20 students (and the professor's fee was $ 120).
