University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (go blue). It really has a fantastic computer science program in engineering. My son graduates this year (same field your son is interested in) and did extremely well there (working with professors doing research, etc.). Of course, there are plenty of other places to go too - best wishes!

The best college for a game design major would be Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton, FL. Their BFA in Computer Animation is one of the better though-of computer game-design degrees in the industry. Here's an excerpt from their brochure: This 3 year program offers all that you need to jump-start an exciting career in cutting edge computer animation. Some of the topics covered include Storyboarding Process, Character Animation, Character Modeling, Advanced Digital Compositing, Filmmaking, Advanced Applications in Animation, Advanced Visual Effects and more. MFA in Special Effects Animation: This 4 semester masters program covers the advanced techniques in animation with a strong slant on special effects. Topics cover high end techniques like motion capturing and other cutting edge technologies and theory. Learn from industry experts from leading companies such as SEGA, ImageWorks, Disney, and more. They're one of the United States' most technologically equipped digital artist colleges. They have the tools and techniques to empower your creative career. Other than this option, there are several online and technical schools where you can get the kind of information you are looking for. For the most part, graphics design majors at colleges are not very differntiated. I have two good friends who pursued this career, and both of them gained more mileage from their technical proficiencies than from their degrees. (though the degree is a must)

Check out University of Nevada, Reno. It is a low cost university and in a great city, The Biggest Little City in the World. One of my sons went here and graduated and the next is in jr college and ready to transfer in. The have a great computer science program. Why? Because computer science is needed all over Nevada in the gaming industry. My sons friend graduated from there with his BS and got the best job ever at IGT (International Gaming Technology) and he makes big money just starting out for a young man of 25. He works right here in town creating new video games and new slot machine games. Check them out at www.unr.edu

When it comes to finding a good job after graduating with a degree in the sciences, you need to deal with a balancing act.

On the one hand, the accumulation of scientific knowledge can be of great help to society and the acquiring of knowledge was probably one of the big motivating factors in your choosing science as your vocation. On the other hand, it is the application of science to consumer goods that will end up getting you a paycheck.

So, how do you manage to get a good, well-paying job in the field of science? In theory it is pretty simple: figure out how society needs science.

One of the biggest ways in which science will play a big part in everyday life is coming in a few years. The baby-boomer generation is starting to reach retirement age and in a decade or so there will be giant demand for products that help these aging boomers stay healthy.

For those who are recent or soon-to-be graduates with science degrees, this opens a lot of do ors. First and most obvious is medical technology. As the baby-boomer generation ages, there will be a great need to quality and cost-effective medical devices. These devices can be medical equipment or they can be related to living a regular life while dealing with the effects of aging.

Take a look around the room you are sitting in. How would the use of the things in that room change as you aged? Maybe new materials could be developed to make a more comfortable show. Maybe a simpler interface could be designed for complex electronics. If you look hard enough, you could find myriad ways in which the retirement and the aging of the boomer generation will affect the development of science.

And where there is a need, there will be companies creating products to fill that need. And those companies will need switched on employees.

Here's a quick way to find some companies that may be hiring. Do a web search for products related to the elderly. Find the big bran d names in those results and then check out their website. Odds are, you will find employment opportunities.

These opportunities may require that you relocate, but that is a reality in pretty much every industry. If you can get started with some of these companies now, then in ten or fifteen years, you will be an indispensable employee who has a very promising career.
