Science fair projects for middle school aren't expected to be completely original, but the way you present it should be. Middle school science fairs tend to be more competitive than elementary school and you will need to do a much more involved report and presentation. For this reason, you should pick a fairly quick project so you have time to focus on your report. When you pick a topic for your middle school science experiment, you should keep in mind that the judges will favor the students who have a complete understanding of their project and have a well organized presentation.

One interesting project is to find out about the greenhouse effect and what causes it, by creating your own atmosphere in a glass jar and doing some research. You could also look at how much carbon dioxide is produced by different gas sources, which will help us to understand the impact of these gas sources on global warming.

Or you could take a look at the different methods of pu rifying water including distillation, filtration, and reverse osmosis. You could also do a test to see how much starch some of the popular foods that we eat contain. For this experiment, you need six small samples of some common foods like rice, cheese, butter, meat, potato, apple, salt and flour, and you'll need some iodine, an eye dropper, a glass jar, a starch chart and a plate. Place the samples of food on the plate, mix the iodine solution (50% water/50% iodine), and apply a few drops of the iodine solution to each piece of food. Be sure to record your results on the starch chart before moving on to the next piece.
