Question by Poison Ivy: How do I prepare for a computer science program for university? I want to take a computer science program at university, but unfortunately I know nothing about computer science. I've heard a lot of math is involved and I'm very good at math. I believe there is an intro to computer science course for the program, but I would like to be prepared so things go smoothly. What books should I read? What tutorials should I watch? Coming from someone who just graduated with a BS in Computer Science I would really try to get to know some sort of programming before you start. About 1/2 the people who started in computer science realized they hated programming and dropped out after their first or second year. I can't give you any real amazing books off the top of my head but it will help you so much if you at least know the basics. These include variables conditionals loops (both for and while) functions (OH MY GOD KNOW WHAT A FUNCTION IS and understand what the is meant by parameters of a function) Look for some beginning C++ or Java tutorials as one of these will probably be what you focus on in your intro classes.

It takes a lot of work to come up with a science experiment that will really impress the judges. While the choices for science fair projects are endless, it does take some planning to come up with the perfect topic that will result in a project that shows well for judging.
One thing that is important to consider when picking a topic is the skill level of the student. An experiment that is too difficult will be hard for the child to successfully complete. Even if the project is done well, if the child doesn't understand the concepts behind the experiment, it will be evident to the judges during the science fair.
Careful planning is important in choosing an appropriate science fair project, also. Don't decide on a topic that will take 3 weeks to implement and finish if there is only one week before the experiment is due. Be sure to have all the items needed, or know for sure that you can get them before deciding on a topic.
Children are naturally curiou s about things. Use this quality in kids to think of an idea that will appeal to your child and their interests. If your child has always been interested in weather, think of an idea that will go along with this interest.
The possibilities for science fair project ideas are unlimited. Take the time to plan ahead and choose the best experiment for your child. The extra time spent in preparation will show when the project is finished. The judges will be sure to be impressed.
