Are you beginning to look for those easy science fair projects for your kids to do this school year? Of course you are, as well every other parent whose child is interested in science. Here are a few points to consider in finding what you are looking for.
First, get the right project. Make sure that the science project you are searching for is suited for your child's age group and school grade level. These curriculums are specifically designed for a child to easily complete on their own without any help.
Second, clear directions. Step by step instructions is very important because it helps in the progression of the experiment and keeps a child focused on the success at each stage of the project. Younger kids are visual learners so look for directions with pictures it will help to motivate them.
Third, use simple materials. Having to buy specific items and equipment can get expensive so cut your cost and find those specific projects that use items foun d in your own house or outside in nature. Another reason for household products is that it makes it easier for your child because they are already familiar with the items. With simple materials readily available your child will be motivated to conduct their science experiment more than once.
Fourth, find something unique. Science fairs usually have a number of duplicate projects on display. So make a point of searching many books and websites taking notice of the ones which repeat often because most likely they are the ones that you will see duplicates of.
Finally, I encourage going to the library because books may seem outdated due to the speed and quick searches on the internet but they are still around. You never know, the old beat up book you overlook and dismiss may be the very book that has the best and easiest science fair projects of all.

My vet is a wee bit more ethical than most and does not promote any one food over another. She will, if asked, give her professional opinion on some of the better known brand names. Then again, she is actually a large (farm) animal vet and only does small animals when time permits as a service to the community.

This has been on my mind a lot! A year and a half ago I got my first cat and my vet promoted science diet and gave a free sample if I signed some paper. I didn't take it because the first ingredient was animal by products, followed by corn and corn gluten! The very things we should stay away from. But the vet insisted that was fine and Science Diet and MediCal are the only brands to go for if I am going to feed dry food. She said any wet food regardless of brand is better though. So I bought science diet all this time but just recently switched because I think it is a marketing scam and I think that the vets have contracts with Hills to make extra money. Just look at the ingredients and tell me honestly that anything in there is good for pets!

I work with diabetic cat owners from a ll over teaching them the right way to treat their cats. The number 1 reason cats get diabetes is DRY FOOD The food they prescribe for diabetics is either no good for diabetes (DRY DM MD WD) or holds o value over commercially available canned foods and is worse in quality My biggest gripe is most vets are not up to date on nutrition and nutrition is what is causing all these problems when cats start hitting their teenage years I will NEVER blindly trust a vet or a doctor for me for that matter. You need to research things

You have to take most vets food recommendations with a grain of salt. When they attend med school, nearly all of their classroom time is spent on medical issues. For maybe a week, they may be exposed to nutrition and this is usually presented by the food manufacturers. Bottom line, it's all about the manufacturers making a profit than benefiting your pet.

No - they have not promoted it to ME. They have it on the shelves but I feed top quality dry and canned foods as well as raw, so I do not need any kind of promoting. And if they did, I'd be polite and tell them that I don't think its good for my cats and why its not good, but thanks anyway.

I don't think Science Diet is any better than other top brands. The vet insisted I feed my dog Science Diet when she had really bad allergies. I kept her on that for about two years, and her allergies actually got worse. She also hated the taste. I switched her over to Pedigree and not only did she love it, her allergies significantly improved. It seems that every vet I've ever gone to has had a contract with Science Diet and sells it straight from their office. It just seems like a marketing scam to me.

I think they know better than to try to push that stuff off on me now.... Actually the last thing a vet suggested was good -- the canned Natures Variety Instinct in venison, rabbit or duck, for my cat with both diabetes and IBD. Unfortunately years before that, I did just blindly follow another vet's recommendation and put that cat (who had just had a urethral blockage & they found he had struvite crystals ) on DRY Hill's c/d. He kept gaining weight, which the vet admitted was a common "side effect" but the vet's only idea was to keep decreasing the amount. Even on a small amount he was still gaining weight, but the vet said I would KILL my cat if I switched his food. . It was like he thought this food had magical properties and nothing else could possibly work. Finally my cat got diabetes. and i realized I needed to learn for myself about cat nutrition. When i put him on a high protein, low carb canned commercial food for the diabetes , he never again had problems with crystals. So I could have just done that in the first place. I suggest anyone whose vet is pushing SD as the best food, try bringing in some Wellness or Merrick or Natures Variety Instinct or Blue Buffalo Wilderness , and ask them to read the ingredients on both and explain to you why the SD is better. Because it just does not make sense. byproducts and corn. It might as well be Meow Mix but costs a lot more.
