Question by franc.stoic: What is the relation of computer science to mathematics? What are the similarities and more importantly the differences between computer science and math? If you could, please send/link me to Knuth's paper on the subject (I can't afford to buy it, can anybody give it for free of cost please?) I am looking for Knuth's paper for _free_, not the paid version. The JSTOR version requires me to subscribe. If not Knuth's paper, then an answer based on your learning and experience. Best answer for What is the relation of computer science to mathematics?:

There is limited overlap in materials. BUT, there is some overlap in abilities. I started studying computer science in high school - 30 years ago ! I was in the first class in my high school. I was a decent math student. But I have made a good living from software development. The overlap of material can be seen in things like database randomizer algorithyms and, to a lesser extent, in data modeling.

computer is built up on maths

Well, computer science is built on codes. When you look in the address bar, you can see numbers that are linked into the address. Here is Knuth's homepage, I think, if it's what your looking for. http://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/

Since the invention of the computer itself if from mathematicians like John Von Neumann and Alan Turing, computer science is rooted in mathematics, emphasising the bridges between theory and practice. computer scientists must be able to write compilers, design VLSI and transfer heat in semiconductors, but without mathematics, none of these could be possible. There is also a book called 'The evolving relationship between computer science and mathematics' by K. Tillekeratne The Univ., Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. http://www.stonehill.edu/compsci/Shai_papers/MathandCS.pdf http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0002-9890%28197404%2981%3A4%3C323%3ACSAIRT%3E2.0.CO%3B2-V&size=LARGE&origin=JSTOR-enlargePage

Mathematics supports computer science by showing how to construct algorithms, compare the efficiency of algorithms and determine the most efficient algorithm(s). Computer science supports mathematics by allowing mathematicians to visualize sets and to test computationally-intense conjectures, especially in rapidly finding counterexamples to incorrect conjectures.

Are you or your child looking for an easy science project to do for school or just for something fun to do at home? You usually don't have to look further than around the house for a fun and easy project. There are countless easy science projects you can do with food, plants, insects and more that you can do with materials in or around your home.
One easy science project to do with plants is to see if seeds will germinate without soil. All you need for this project is some seeds, water, newspaper, paper towels and some plastic baggies. Simply place a wet paper towel in a baggie with some seeds, a wet piece of newspaper in another baggie with some seeds, and a bit of water in a baggie with some seeds and wait and see if any of the seeds sprout. You can make a chart to record your findings.
Or you could do a project with eggs and see if hard boiled eggs will spin more times than uncooked eggs, or a project to make a hard boiled fit into a jar with an opening that's smaller than the egg. For this project you just need a hardboiled egg, a jar with an opening that's smaller than the egg and some matches. Place the egg over the hole to show that it doesn't fit, then remove the egg, have an adult drop a lit match into the bottle and wait for the flame to go out. Immediately after the flame goes out place the egg over the opening again and watch as it gets sucked into the jar.
