What are the three pieces for understanding science, and how does each one make science distinctive and âespecially successful?â I am asking this in sort of an abstract way, ultimately about the philosophy of science. This is for my: Intellectual Foundation to Modern Science class. Its a philosophy course. I have to admit, I prefer physics. It makes more sense. Best answer for What are the three pieces for understanding science?:

Philosophy and science are diametrically opposed. There is no 'philosophy' of science, as science deals in hard facts, proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Don't listen to 'DA'. There is DEFINITELY a 'philosophy of science', and it is a rather interesting crossroad of knowledge. I'm not sure what particular 3 pieces you would be referring to, but I can defnitely address the 'abstraction', in philosophy, there should be no other way, yes? As far as making science 'distinctive', leave distinctions for the purveyors of art and the like. 'Especially successful'? Well it should either be successful or not, no especially required. First, you should understand that the word science literally means "knowledge" - presumably knowledge attained through rational inquiry into empirical data. Indeed, the 4 canons of philosophy all pertain to the pursuit of science. Logic is, of course the primary tool in the rationality needed for scientific thinking, but also metaphysics (knowing what is real or not), and epistemology (the theory of knowledge - skepticism, rationalty, and empiricism). Now, many people question how ethics relates to science - go ahead and open a paper, or watch a program about the use/misuse of science - it is ALWAYS, at its core, about the ethical (or unethical) application of science, is it not? Sorry for the length.
