Oh no, it's time for the dreaded science fair project. But wait. Science projects are supposed to be fun.

And they can be, if you know the secrets to successful science fair projects, starting with choosing the right project for your child.

Here's 6 steps to help you choose a science fair project that will be fun for you and your child.

First things first. And that first step is to check out the science fair requirements and understand what criteria your child's project must meet.

Next, map out the timeline and important due dates. This will help you avoid the minute crazies and ensure that you don't choose a project that takes longer to do than the time you have to do it in.

Now, let's talk money. How much do you have to spend on this science project? Knowing what your budget is before you choose a project will ensure that you don't break the bank or encourage your child to choose something that really isn't possible financially.

No w that you have the criteria for the project figured out, it's time to get down to the brainstorming.

First, and most importantly, ask your child if they have any ideas. They may have already decided on something themselves, and then your job is a lot easier - you can just start helping them make it happen.

But if they don't have any ideas, then consider their interests. What are they interested in? What do they collect or think about, or talk about, or ask questions about? Your child will enjoy science a lot more if you do a project they are actually interested in.

Next, go online and search for a topic your child is interested in and "science fair project" or "science project", or head to the library and check out one or two of the great science project books you'll find there.

Scout out some ideas that meet your basic criteria of requirements, timeline, and budget, and share them with your child and ask them if any interest them. Or, even better si t down with your son or daughter and look through the choices together and discuss the criteria you are looking for together. You'll be spending some quality time with your child and have the benefit of teaching them how to find the information they need to get started.

Once you and your child pick your project, the next step is to get started - gathering supplies and putting together the project. Enjoy the process. Science is all about discovery - and it is fun!
