Fun Science Experiment - Crushing a Can With Air [sciencetechnology-center.blogspot.com]

Wraiths, sprites, fairies, leprechauns, trolls, etc., the modern view of most elementals is largely harmless and quaint but the reality of these strange creatures could be far more sinister and disturbing than one might think.

Beyond - Elementals

You do not need to buy expensive science kits to have fun with science. There are many fun science experiments that can be done using only household items. I am sure you have probably seen plenty of science experiments that make things explode. Have you ever seen one that can make an object implode? Well, there is no better time than now to learn how it is done.

For this experiment, you will need:

-An aluminum can (soda can) -Water -A saucepan -Kitchen Tongs

Lets start this fun science experiment by filling the saucepan with cold water. Now, we need to put 1-2 tbsp of water in the empty aluminum can. Heat the can until the water starts to boil in the can. You will know that the water is boiling when you see a vapor cloud escape the opening of the can. Make sure the saucepan filled with water is close by. After the water in the can has boiled for about 30 seconds, quickly turn the can upside down in the cold water using the tongs. The can s hould immediately implode!

Why did this happen? The water vapor created from heating the can pushed air out of the can. When the can is inverted and placed into the cold water, the water vapor in the can condenses quickly causing the pressure in the can to decrease rapidly. Now the outside pressure is much higher than the pressure inside the can which causes the can to collapse! This only works because the can is weak and can't withstand the pressure difference. A stronger object would need a much higher pressure difference to collapse.

There are a number of science experiments that can be done using the idea of pressure. I encourage you to get creative and experiment with pressure, you will be entertained for hours.

Question by mightymouse: What is the difference between majoring in Biomedical Science and majoring in Biology? I'm interested in being Pre-Med, and most students choose Biology as their major if they want to go into that field. Someone told me that Biomedical Science is the study of biology in relation to medicine, so I chose it for my major instead. Can anyone tell me what exactly this major is and whether it will benefit me to major in it instead of Biology? Best answer for What is the difference between majoring in Biomedical Science and majoring in Biology?:

Answer by abemousa95
Biomedical Science is the study of things like remedies that will cure diseases animals catch by using animal DNA. Biology is the study of things such as animals. You can also go to Marine Biology or Marine Biomedical Science. I think marine animals are more interesting. Hope I helped.

I'm currently doing a degree in Biomedical Science :-D Biomed is pretty much what it sounds like: the biology of medicine. We do things like organ systems and learn about the human body etc. My first semester papers included: Organic Chemistry, Human Development, Essential Biology (microbiology, genetics, evolution, biochemistry) and Population Health. Its essentially just a more specific specialisation. Your just narrowing down your learning into mainly human-based biology. Which would probably be good for you, as your aming to do medicine. I love it, its a great subject and I highly reccomend it. ADDENUM: Here in New Zealand BioMed or Health Science are the two prerequisite first years if you want to apply for medicine, so that probably gives you an idea that by choosing BioMed you're heading in the right direction.
